Vidarbha, featuring 62 seats spread across 11 districts, is a key focus in the upcoming assembly election and expected to be pivotal in government formation, sparking intense competition between the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). In the 2019 elections, BJP emerged as the dominant force in the region by winning 29 seats, with Congress following at 15, undivided NCP securing six, and unified Shiv Sena claiming four. Smaller parties and independents, including Prahar Janshakti, collectively secured five seats. With the split in NCP and Shiv Sena and the rise of independents, Vidarbha is poised as a significant battleground this time around.
East Vidarbha, which encompasses six districts – Nagpur, Wardha, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, and Bhandara, has traditionally been a stronghold for BJP. However, internal conflicts and a resurgent MVA present a formidable challenge to Mahayuti's dominance in the region. In Nagpur, the district with the highest number of politically significant seats in Vidarbha, intense battles are anticipated. While BJP saw a decrease in its seat count from 11 to six in 2019, Congress aims to leverage anti-incumbency sentiment to potentially reclaim constituencies in Nagpur city, where it narrowly lost to BJP in the previous election. Congress also seeks to strengthen its position in Nagpur North and West, won by the party in 2019. In rural Nagpur, Congress is emphasizing farmer distress and local development issues, which proved to be vulnerabilities for BJP in 2019. The saffron party, on the other hand, is relying on the popularity of its local leaders and organizational prowess to retain its seats.
In Wardha, BJP is expected to face a tough challenge from Congress in the assembly constituency. Deoli is likely to witness a contest between BJP, Congress, or Shiv Sena (UBT), whereas in Hinganghat, BJP is gearing up to defend its seat against NCP (Sharad Pawar). The battle in Arvi is also shaping up to be fiercely contested. In Gadchiroli, there are internal conflicts within the BJP which is a politically sensitive district. The BJP MLA, Dr. Deorao Holi, has hinted at dissent within the party, and the MVA alliance is making strong efforts to challenge the BJP. The NCP, led by Sharad Pawar, has fielded a formidable candidate, Bhagyashree Atram, in the Aheri seat against her father Dharamrao Baba Atram of the NCP. A tight battle between the Congress and BJP is expected in Armori.
Chandrapur, an industrial hub and a stronghold of the BJP, is gearing up for tough competitions in its six constituencies. In Chandrapur constituency, both the Shiv Sena and BJP are courting independent MLA Kishor Jorgewar. BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar is facing strong opposition in his hometown seat of Ballarpur after a challenging Lok Sabha election. Meanwhile, the Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar aims for a third consecutive term in Bramhapuri. The Warora seat, left vacant by the Congress MLA's win in the LS poll, may be contested by Wadettiwar's daughter Shivani. In Rajura, Congress MLA Subhash Dhote could face a BJP rival.
In Gondia, strategies are being finalized. Independent MLA Vinod Agrawal, now aligned with the BJP, is being challenged by Congress's Gopaldas Agrawal. BJP's Vijay Rahangdale will compete against Ravikant Bopche of the NCP in Tiroda. The political scenario in Arjuni Moragaon is still unclear, with NCP (Ajit Pawar) expected to announce its candidate soon. Congress's Sasharam Korote is gearing up for a tough battle in Amgaon against an upcoming BJP candidate.
Bhandara's three constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Castes. Independent MLA Narendra Bhondekar, an ally of Shinde, is facing opposition within the BJP over his nomination. In Tumsar, NCP's Raju Karemore will compete against his rival, former MLA Charan Waghmare, who is now with the NC.Sharad Pawar (P), Congress, and multiple BJP contenders are all vying for the seat in Sakoli, currently held by MPCC president Nana Patole, creating an intriguing political scenario. The Western Vidarbha region, which encompasses districts like Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola, Washim, and Buldhana, has traditionally been a stronghold of the MVA alliance. However, the BJP has made strides in the past two elections. Internal disagreements over seat-sharing between Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena are complicating their election strategies in this region.
Amravati is a hub of political activity where fierce electoral battles are expected, especially in the main seat of the district. Congress and NCP (Ajit Pawar) are competing for dominance, while smaller parties like MNS could further complicate the situation. In other constituencies like Badnera and Teosa, various parties such as Yuva Swabhiman Party, Shiv Sena, and NCP are expected to face off. Yavatmal, a district traditionally dominated by Congress, is seeing a rise in BJP's influence with five out of seven seats now under BJP's control. Congress is striving to regain its position in Pusad and Digras amidst the ongoing seat-sharing discussions within the MVA alliance.
In Akola, a quadrangular contest is anticipated with Mahayuti, MVA, VBA, and Prahar Janshakti all preparing to field strong candidates. Competitive battles are expected in constituencies like Akot and Murtizapur, particularly reserved for Scheduled Castes, where the BJP aims to maintain its supremacy. Washim will witness a triangular struggle in constituencies like Karanja and Risod, shaping up as a closely fought electoral battleground. An intense three-way competition is expected to occur between Mahayuti, MVA, and VBA. The BJP is likely to nominate Lakhan Malik again in Washim, while a new candidate will be chosen for Karanja following the passing of current MLA Rajendra Patni. In Risod, Congress's Amit Zanak is seeking a fourth term. In Buldhana, a historic battleground for Shiv Sena, there will be a competition between Sena (UBT) and Sena (Shinde) in various constituencies. Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray is targeting seats in Buldhana and Mehkar, while Congress is focusing on Malkapur, Chikhli, Jalgaon Jamod, and Khamgaon. There is a possibility that the NCP (Sharad Pawar) will nominate Rajendra Shingane in Sindkhed Raja, although internal disagreements within the MVA could add complexity to this race.
